Since returning to Barnard Castle in July, I’ve been doing a lot of busking with my hammered dulcimer. I first did this type of freelance performing with my voice and guitar in the Paris subway 50+ years ago as a college student. Later, playing my Marxophone in the Boston subway led to an invitation to contribute to the 1989 album Music in the Air: Boston Street Musicians Vol .1, produced by Steve Friedman of Melville Park Studio.
Hammered dulcimer is now my preferred street instrument. It carries well outdoors and it’s great fun turning people on to something they may not have heard before. Over the years I’ve busked with it in Boston, Cambridge, and Newburyport, MA; Philadelphia, PA; Portland, ME; and North Conway, NH in the US. Now I’m back at it here in Barney, where I had the privilege of getting mention in our local newspaper, the Teesdale Mercury.
With so much trouble in this weary world, I aim to bring a bit of beauty and joy to public spaces. In addition to busking with the dulcimer, I also share music with other instruments and voice. FMI, please look around this website. Thank you!
